The Horror Part Deux

So... it wasn't just me and munch, but Troll and Kumiko too... It's been an ongoing battle all evening. Joy! At this point I'm fine, having regurgitated everything available (not much, considering I only had bacon, eggs and cabbage for breakfast and nothing after that). So I'm now in charge of the regurgitation cleaning brigade, standing firm at 3 loads of laundry and (hopefully not) climbing.

The conclusion, if we stick to the 'bad food' which fits my symptoms then we're down to one possible culprit... THE MILK! THE MILK (with it's cute baby wolf on the side) will be turned over to public health officials tomorrow, just in case it's been really naughty and not just gone bad in the warm house.

Anyways, I shall leave you all with something more cheerful:

The Horror!

So this was one day I'd like a take back on, at least partially... Bleh.

It started out well enough, I took the car to the shop to get repaired and I got some studying done there while waiting for them to finish it up. Have I ever mentioned that service in Japan is way above average? Probably, it's one of their cultural selling points if you want to put it that way. Anyways, I get home and the trouble starts... Munchkin is on a roll with vomiting. Everything she put in, came up. No fun to be had there. Then we get a nice delivery of mismatched socks! They rock, even if they are pricey (shop in Vermont for the uninitiated - best woolies ever and you don't have to worry about matching, because they don't). At the same time I get my x-mas present - WotLK - computer game. Me and the kids went through the art book that came with it to appropriate calls of 'oooo' (Munch) and 'scary' (Troll). I love doing that - and Sasha always has a blast with scary stuff, to the point of singing 'Scary, scary, it's not scary...' - a song from the morning kids' English show. Gave me a wonderful giggle. Then I get queasy - oh and all through this Munch is throwing up at regular intervals. Yay...

So there we are with two queasy people and we figured that Munch must have eaten something that made her throw up, because that's pretty much the only time I get queasy. My new diet has done wonders for stabilizing all kinds of stomach/intestinal issues and on top of general balance every time I get even a touch of bad food it comes back up. Sometimes it takes a while. I don't mind the puking, it's generally hard, fast and complete and then I feel just fine... but being queasy, plus cleaning up a long stream of baby puke on me, the sheets, towels etc. (One whole load of laundry ready to go with just baby puked on stuff) it is a bit much. It was quite unpleasant. Now of course I finished, in the sink rather than the porcelain god, which made more of a mess to clean up... but I'm good. And wifey dearest comes down and says 'I'm queasy and have a period'... if it doesn't rain it pours. Right now Troll and obasan are fine and segregated from the hospital population, although I'm at least back to snuff... although still cleaning up my lovely mess in the bathroom sink and shower from my latest regurgitation event. Joys.

Oh, and we had about 20cm of snow last night, and probably another 5cm of snow/sleet today. It's getting nice and white... and I had to shovel snow this morning. Is that a good or a bad thing?

Enough regurgitation and desire for takebacks and on with the show!

Forgot to mention

The new president is an intelligent constitutional law scholar, that should be solidly in the plus column. Not much more to say about that aspect. A lot of people think the color barrier issue is a big one, and for generations older than me, I suspect it is a huge issue. For the immigrant and black communities it is huge. For me... color? What color? I really could care less, beyond the possibility that we finally will see see more than one qualified, intelligent candidate in future elections. I'm not betting on it though.

That being said, McCain used to be decent. Sad to see him reduced to Palin as a running mate.

And that really should be the last word for today... although Alaska seem keen to elect Mr. Pork and Bribes Stevens to the senate... that blows the mind.

Listening to the Acceptance speech

I now know why you shouldn't listen to the candidates directly. Obama is a fantastic speaker. Easy to get caught up in if he goes full bore. As good a reason as any to make sure you don't listen to campaign speeches. Getting caught up in charisma does not enable one to make good decisions on election issues.

Uh, oh. There are some real issues in this speech. Individual liberty and 'spirit of service'... eep! Someone did not manage their incompatible terms properly. Individual liberty is completely incompatible with anything other than a voluntary decision to help. Government does not factor. Gah! Any suggestions concerning a 'national service' or similar stuff... these are ideas that are not compatible with the idea of individual liberty. Please, that kind of thinking is straight up stupid.

More pictures pt. 3

Last batch. Hope you enjoy them.

I have a few more, but a lot of them need to be turned, and I don't have the time to do that right now.

From the summer.

Oh, McCain's concession speech was good - minus the very, very sad endorsement of Palin *shivers*

Election Morning

Ok, I know, long time no update. But here I am, listening to the election coverage on NPR while having cnn and the 538 open to check their maps so I figured I might update with some thoughts and pictures.

So as of 12:25 local here, the election is mostly over. The key states of Ohio, New Mexico etc. have been called for Obama, so it's pretty much over. That's nice, yet it still sucks. Three things come to mind immediately as problems.

1. Federal Spending. Unless there is a target to reach a balanced non-porked out budget the US is screwed. This does not mean taxes should be raised. A couple of net places to keep your eyes on for information related to this: Downsize DC and Bailoutsleuth.

2. Continued attacks on rights and freedoms. Obama is probably the better choice of the two candidates on this topic, but his police and drug policies and appointments as well as Biden on the ticket raises some real concerns on this topic. Check out Radley Balko at The Agitator or Reason for information and links on that.

3. Bad economic thinking - Ah, NPR just called Virginia for Obama with 85% of votes tallied with some left in Fairfax and Arlington. Game, set and match as they say. - This is one of the topics where I think both candidates and general government are mostly wrong. You can't keep throwing taxpayer money out to prop up businesses or try to create markets where none exist. The government is not suited to this job, and the belief that they 'can fix the economy' is a joke. Take a look at the actual bailout bill, the pork laden piece of garbage that it is, and cry. This kind of thinking isn't going away, in particular under Democrats. Fiscal responsibility used to be a Republican idea, the Democrats have not been known for it, and their recent support for Bush's spending shows how unlikely we are to see a change in spending. This will be a recurring theme and problem. Many, many places to read about this.

Anyways, enough of the depression about in how deep shit we are, it could have been worse. Palin could have been in office, and as an atheist, libertarian, and (hopefully) rational person that would have been a ****ing disaster. She's a loon, a very, very bad loon. I'm really, really glad they didn't let her near the white house. If they put her on the 2012 ticket the republican party will not recover.

For me, I made the decision to not vote, CT wasn't ever in doubt for Obama, so I didn't have to vote for a lesser evil to keep Palin and the religious nuts out, but to vote for any evil is still choosing to participate and legitimizing it and I can't do that. Previously, I thought and my education emphasized that politics are all about being pragmatic. However when you're constantly being pragmatic and the only choice is a lesser evil you are on a slippery slope downhill. And because I don't think federal intrusion in state affairs, as for example the raids on legal medical marijuana growers in California, the ridiculous overseas adventures, the intrusions into the private affairs of its citizens and the disgusting, profligate waste of taxpayer money on everything from 'the war on terror' (read Bruce Schneier for some on that) to 'the war on drugs' and 'abstinence only education'. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I can't legitimize any institution that keeps doing these things. I can't participate in that, I won't participate in it.

And that's enough about that. I've had it up to here with politics... Next post will have some fun stuff.

And NPR called it for Obama. All done.

From the mouth of babes

A quick troll quote:

As we're driving home from their first day of daycare the troll hears us mention grandma and grandpa and immediately asks where they are.

Troll: Where is grandma?
Dad: Grandma is working in Africa.
Troll: Grandma is in Africa working.
Troll: Where is grandpa?
Dad: Grandpa is in Norway, working.
Troll: Grandpa working no telebi miru in Norway. (trans. Grandpa is working at watching television in Norway)

From the mouth of babes.

As for our general state, we're all good and busy. We found a great daycare for the munchkin after much searching. Our troll is currently in the same place, but we're working on getting her somewhere else to be for the long haul as she needs to be around kids her own age, not just the little ones.

The troll misses you all, and often will ask about where you are, what you are doing, and if we're going to visit (usually when we're in the car, so I'm not quite sure she has the concept of distance quite down yet). We also miss you, but I have to admit it was good to get home again. Summer is the time to enjoy Hokkaido - fresh vegetables everywhere, beautiful weather and lovely scenery. And on a more personal note - it's way easier resisting temptations when bad foods aren't even in the house.

And that's all for now, I have to get back to entertaining the munchkin this morning.

Take care!

A couple of kid developments

A couple of cool developments with the kids over the last couple of days.

1. The troll will actually talk to me on the phone and hold a conversation. I usually call Kumiko on Monday and Tuesday nights before heading home from work. Troll of course demands the phone and wants to tell me about her day. It's a lot of fun.

2. Munchkin laughs - She's been moving that way for a while now, but only the last week or so she has really laughed. It's charming, amusing and very cute. Especially since I love tickling her.

Anyways that's all for now.

Dad in the hospital

Came home from a long shopping trip to Tomakomai - busy, busy day to find a YIM note from mom about dad going to the hospital. Figured I'd make this an open post so mom can posts some updates for everyone. Right now I just know dad has abdominal pains and is for a abdominal CT and overnight observation.

Last time he hit the hospital it was for some African ear infection that almost killed him. Hope it isn't that bad this time... if I had to guess it was probably the lutefisk... but it's probably worse. Hope it's all going to be ok.

*crossing fingers*

And mom, feel free to pop updates in the comment section.

As for us. We're good. Troll is conked after waking up at 5am and having a long day out shopping. Munchkin is having a ball in her chair with her toys, and I'm watching 'The Wire'. We're all pretty good, if a bit wasted from the long day. AEON in Tomakomai was a good place to go shopping as the food choices were decent and the shopping not half bad price wise. Definitely an alternative to our usual Chitose trip on on the weekends. Also got us some good king-crab at a good price - makes me very happy.

Anyways that's all for today, troll decided to wake up and hang out with daddy so I gotta take care of her. Catch you later.

A couple of pictures of the little ones - and yes, the mittens and red sweater used to be Liv's.

Back in the saddle

Cheers Everyone,

I'm now back at work and should be back to posting somewhat regularly again... The last week and a bit got very lethargic as I somehow managed to injure my foot, and Munchkin was sick so I was stuck at home instead of skiing and having fun. Ah well.

Got a bunch of stuff I want to share, but I'll put it in the posts that follow this one. Before I get on with it, here is one quick picture.

Late Night in Hokkaido

Last Sunday before the nominal start of work here. I teach Monday and Tuesday and then I go skiing for the rest of the week, before my schedule turns completely normal on me next Monday.

Nothing much happened during the day. Just relaxing and taking it easy. This evening I played the good Samaritan and picked up a pair of ALTs at the airport and drove them home. They live and work in Iwamizawa which isn't all that far from here (30-40min drive - the airport is 30). They came in on the last flight from Tokyo at 1030, and I got home around 1am.

Driving around at night in the snow is fantastic though. It was a really wonderful night; alternating snow and clear skies. The snow over the last couple of days has been great, and Iwamizawa was amazing. A real 'winter wonderland' as James (that would be the Californian I picked up) pointed out. The drive back was equally beautiful, with the big snow flakes ending as soon as I got out of Iwamizawa and the skies being completely clear by the time I hit Yuni. I got one of the best views of Orion I've had since I was a little kid on the road near Yuni. I had to stop for a while and just enjoy the view.

A couple of things really were brought home to me when I was out driving. Winter in Hokkaido is something special. Oiwake isn't much for winter... the snow always seems to melt, but elsewhere it stays properly and it is really beautiful. Also, I find that I enjoy Hokkaido a lot and I'm very, very much looking forward to Wednesday and skiing :) I'll miss Hokkaido when we leave here, although I don't think I'll miss my working conditions :P

Anyways, time to get going - a couple of pictures from Iwamizawa first though. The first is of the intersection near the Mos Burger that is amazingly open until 1am (wow! - watery coffee though - and because of my diet I didn't actually feel remotely like eating anything). The second is just at a random intersection. I really just wanted you to see the snow... it makes me very happy - figured I could share a bit.

Take care and have a great week!

A short note to the family

Cheers everyone, thought I should toss this out there.

Feel free to comment/chat in the comment sections or ask questions. Nothing like a bit of interaction.

Of course, also feel free to pass this url along to family if you think they'd be interested. I'm horrible at keeping my address list up to date.

Nothing else going on here. Nap-time for the trolls.

Lazy Saturday

Not much going on in this part of the world. Well, other than the first of several Amazon deliveries. I got part of my present for myself today (yay!) - Shadowmarch by Tad Williams, Starship: Mutiny by Mike Resnick and The Shangri-la diet by Seth Roberts. I'm really looking forward to all of them, but probably most the diet book as it should be an interesting read.

Other than that it's just a quiet weekend. No daycare for the troll, so we're just taking it easy. I start work, sort of, on Monday. But I should be able to go skiing Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week if nothing comes up.

I'll leave you all with another photo. Take care!

Back home again

Not much of an absence, but it was relaxing time well spent. The service at Marukoma was excellent, the dinner was fantastic, and the onsen was good.

We all had a good time there and got to see a tanuki (sort of like a raccoon) hanging out at the front entrance of the hotel waiting for dinner leftovers. Very cute stuff. There was also a short, but quite nice violin and piano concert that we enjoyed after our family bath.

Other than that the trip home was mostly uneventful - only one car crash on the way. Yesterday we saw two deer, one injured deer (had been hit by a car), one car off the road in a snowbank (we only saw the rear end) and one tow-truck in the ditch with a tow-truck/hauler in the ditch behind it. Good times.

Lake Shikotsuko is a caldera lake, and it is beautiful, winter or summer. It's definitely worth a visit. A couple of pictures to close this off. Take care and enjoy your day!

Oh, and it snowed a lot the other day! Wee! Time for some skiing on Friday!

Ps. The last photo was just for dad (and no, I didn't have any - Ice cream just isn't appealing these days).

Relaxation time

We're off to Marukoma onsen today, as I mentioned in the last post. We'll be back on the third at some point. Catch you all later. Looking forward to a lazy evening in the hotspring.
